How Do I Use the Medications Section in a Patient's Chart?

In Instinct EMR and Instinct EMR for Primary Care, the Medications section on a patient’s Chart via the Snapshot page gives your team a single, unified view of every medication a patient is currently taking—whether prescribed through Instinct or entered manually from an outside source.

How to view a patient's medication list

  1. Navigate to the Snapshot page while in a patient’s Chart.

  2. The Medications section displays all active medications—both internal (prescribed through Instinct) and external (entered manually).

By default, only Active medications are shown. Use the Hide History and Hide Voided filter toggles to adjust what appears in the list.

Navigate to the Snapshot page in any Patient Chart to view the Medications section.

What appears in the Medications section?

  • Dispensed prescriptions filled through Instinct

  • External prescriptions made within Instinct’s Prescriptions (Rx) panel

  • Historical medications manually added to the Medication list

Note: The medication list reflects a patient's prescribed ongoing day-to-day regimen, not treatments administered during a hospital stay.

External medications display a distinct icon, and hovering shows the Source as Manual—making it easy to distinguish manually entered medications from Instinct prescriptions.

Add Medication History

Use this workflow for medications prescribed by another provider, OTC medications, or supplements that were not dispensed using Instinct.

  1. From the Medications section on the Snapshot page, click the 3-dot menu → Add Medication History.

  2. An +Add Medication window will appear. Fill in the relevant fields.

  3. Click Save. The medication will appear in the Medication list immediately.

How to edit an external medication entry

  1. From the Medications section, locate the external medication you want to update.

  2. Click the 3-dot menu → Edit.

  3. Make your changes and click Save.

Editing from the Snapshot → Medications section is only available for manually entered medications. Internal prescription entries are managed through the Rx Panel.

How to stop or void an external medication

Use Stop when a patient is no longer taking a medication.

Use Void when an entry was added in error and should be removed from the record entirely.

  1. From the Medications section, locate the external medication.

  2. Click the 3-dot menu → Stop or Void.

  3. For stopped medications, the edit modal will open with the status automatically set to Stopped.

  4. Enter the End Date of the Stopped medication.

  5. Click Save. The medication will move to the history view, accessible via the Show History toggle. Voided entries can be shown or hidden using the Hide Voided toggle.

Note: To discontinue an internally prescribed medication (dispensed, written, or Mixlab), do so via the Prescriptions (Rx) side panel. Changes will automatically reflect in the Medication list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Medications section and the Prescriptions Panel?

The Prescriptions Panel is the source of record for what your practice has scripted and dispensed. The Medication list is a broader clinical view—it shows everything a patient is currently taking, including medications from other providers, OTC items, and supplements. Think of the Medication List as an overall view into "What is this patient taking?" and the Prescriptions Panel as "What has our hospital prescribed?"

Is the medication list shared across multiple hospital locations?

The Medication list is patient-scoped. If your hospital is multi-location and shares patient records, medications entered at any location will appear on the list.

Can I refill a prescription from the Medications section?

Not at this time. To refill a prescription, click the Open Prescription in Side Pane icon to the right of any medication to navigate to the Rx Panel and use the existing refill workflow.

The Rx panel can be opened from the Medications section by selecting the Open Prescription in Side Pane icon to the right of any medication

Can I see stopped or voided medications?

Yes. Toggle the Hide History and Hide Voided toggles off (or select Clear Filters to toggle both off at once) to view stopped or voided medications. By default, only active medications are displayed.

Select the filter icon to the right of the search bar in the Medications section to change the filter toggles.
