To use Standards of Care, enter a disease, clinical sign, or drug name. This will populate a list of results that include Clinical, Drugs, DDx, Algorithms, and Handouts.
You can narrow this list down by selecting one of the categories (Clinical, Drugs, DDx, Algorithms, Handouts) under the search bar to show results specific to the desired category.
Categories
Clinical
This category contains the clinical monographs of various diseases associated with the item you entered in the search bar.
When you select one of the Clinical Results, the corresponding clinical monograph will open. Within the monograph, you can use quick-jump keys to navigate directly to key sections, including Signalment, Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment. This lets you quickly access the most relevant information without scrolling through the entire document.
In addition, you can click on View Clinical Handout to open a PDF version of the handout. This PDF can be printed or emailed directly to the patient’s owner, making it easy to share clear and accurate information with clients.
Drugs
This category lists drug options that may be used to treat the condition you searched for.
When you select one of the listed drug results, the corresponding drug monograph will open. Within the monograph, you can use quick-jump links to navigate directly to key sections, such as:
Dosages – Recommended dosing guidelines for different species and conditions.
Dosage Forms – Available formulations (e.g., tablets, injectables, topical preparations).
Interactions – Known drug-to-drug interactions and considerations when combining therapies.
Adverse Effects – Potential side effects and safety concerns to be aware of.
These shortcuts allow you to quickly access the most relevant information for safe and effective prescribing decisions.
If there is a drug handout available for the medication, you will also be able to click on View Drug Handout to open a PDF that can be printed or emailed directly to the owner.
DDX
This category provides a list of differential diagnoses related to the term you entered in the search bar.
When you select one of the DDx results, the system will display a list of potential differential diagnoses associated with that symptom. This helps guide clinical reasoning by presenting conditions that may explain the patient’s presentation.
Algorithms
This section provides algorithms related to the symptom you searched for. These algorithms serve as clinical decision-making tools, offering step-by-step guidance to help you:
Narrow down possible diagnoses.
Determine appropriate diagnostic tests.
Identify recommended treatment pathways.
Ensure consistency in patient care.
By following these algorithms, you can streamline the diagnostic process and support evidence-based clinical decisions. Selecting one of the algorithm results will open a PDF flowchart that visually outlines the recommended diagnostic or treatment pathway.
Handouts
This category displays a list of clinical or drug handouts designed for the patient’s owner, tailored to the item you searched for. These handouts are written in clear, client-friendly language to help owners better understand their pet’s condition or medication. Look for the ES icon next to the drug title to identify handouts available in Spanish. With over 100 of our most frequently used drug handouts professionally translated, you can effectively overcome language barriers and provide clear, accessible instructions to a wider range of pet owners.
Selecting a handout will open a PDF version that can be printed or emailed directly to the patient’s owner.
