Using Chromebooks, Tablets, and Touch-Enabled Devices

Instinct supports several mobile and touch-enabled device options if your practice wants greater flexibility than a laptop or desktop computer offers. This article covers which devices Instinct supports and important limitations to know before you buy.

Choose a supported mobile device

Most practices use Instinct on laptop or desktop computers. If staff need mobility, consider an inexpensive rolling cart for a laptop, following the same setup used in many human hospitals.

If a smaller device is preferred, Instinct currently supports:

  • Chromebook laptop/tablet hybrids

  • Windows touch-enabled laptop/tablet hybrids, such as the Lenovo Tab Plus or Microsoft Surface

Use a device with a minimum screen size of 12 inches. These devices are generally inexpensive, durable, and include a keyboard for converting to laptop mode. When purchasing, follow the same processor, RAM, and monitor specifications outlined in Computer & Hardware Requirements.

Chromebook label printing limitations

Chromebooks use a different printing system than Windows and Mac computers. Because of this, they can't install the traditional DYMO and Zebra printer software required to print prescription labels.

While some Zebra printer models can print from a Chromebook, DYMO's printing software is only available for Windows and Mac. You may need to use a different laptop or desktop for printing prescription labels.

For information about setting up printers on a Chromebook, refer to this Google support article.

Devices Instinct does not recommend

Instinct does not recommend using tablets like an iPad or cellular phones to run Instinct, as these devices offer reduced functionality compared to a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop.
