In Instinct, you can display the Status Board on a TV screen so staff can see patient information from across the room. This article walks through opening a second Instinct instance, setting up the Status Board filters, connecting the TV as a display, and choosing the right connection method.
Before you begin
We highly recommend mounting the TV screen vertically. Instinct displays the same information vertically as horizontally, but a vertical orientation fits more patients on screen.
Open a second instance of Instinct for the TV
On your computer's taskbar, right-click the Instinct application.
Select Instinct again from the menu that appears to open a second Instinct window.
At the sign-in screen, enter your practice's whiteboard PIN (not your personal PIN). Logging in with this PIN opens an instance of Instinct that will not log out automatically.
Note: Please reach out to the Instinct team if you don't know your practice's whiteboard PIN.
Set up the Status Board for the TV
Choose the Status Board view and filters that make sense for where this TV is located in your practice. For example, a TV in the ICU might filter to Ward: ICU and one specific practice location.
Select the board you want to display: My Board, OP Board, IP Board, or Boarding.
Toggle Tx View on to show the treatment timeline.
Select Filters and apply the ones relevant to this screen, such as Ward, Location, Doctor, Service, or Workflow.
Tip: Having trouble fitting all your patients on one screen? Split your ward into two sections (for example, ICU A and ICU B) and filter each TV based on which side of the ward its patients are on.
Set the TV up as a second display
Go to Settings → System → Display on the computer connected to the TV.
Confirm the TV appears as a second display, and set its orientation to Portrait if you mounted it vertically.
Drag the second Instinct window you opened earlier onto the TV screen.
Keep the primary monitor free to open its own, separate instance of Instinct for regular use.
Choose how to connect the TV
You can connect a TV to display Instinct using either of the following methods:
HDMI cable: Connect the TV directly to a laptop or desktop using a standard HDMI cable, then follow the display setup steps above from that computer.
PC stick: Plug a PC stick into the TV's HDMI port so the TV works as an independent monitor without a dedicated computer nearby. Temporarily connect a mouse and keyboard to the TV to log in and adjust display settings, then disconnect them once Instinct is up and running. A PC stick avoids the need to run a long HDMI cable and reduces accidental TV log-outs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set up a TV using Chromecast?
No. Setting up a TV using Chromecast is not possible at this time.
Can I use an Amazon Fire TV Stick?
Instinct does not recommend an Amazon Fire TV Stick. Users have reported being unable to adjust display settings with this device.
Will the TV instance log out automatically after 5 minutes?
No. Logging in with the TV PIN (0000 or 000000) opens an instance of Instinct that does not log out automatically after 5 minutes.
