Before you begin
Tax classes must be created before they can be assigned to products. See Set Up Tax Classes for instructions on creating tax classes.
You must have the appropriate admin permissions to access and edit products in the Admin section.
Assign a tax class to an individual product
Go to Admin → Products and open the product you want to update.
Locate the Tax Class field on the product detail screen.
Select the appropriate tax class from the drop-down.
Select Save.
The tax class is now associated with the product and will appear on any invoice that includes this product from the Tax Class Application Date onward.
Assign or remove tax classes in bulk
To update tax classes across multiple products at once, use the Bulk Edit feature.
Go to Admin → Inventory → Products.
Select the checkboxes next to the products you want to update.
Select Bulk Edit.
Update the Tax Class field as needed—you can assign a tax class or remove an existing one.
Select Save.

How application dates affect product tax assignments
Adding or removing a tax class from a product only affects line items added on or after the Tax Class Application Date on current, active, and future invoices. Past invoices are never impacted.
If a product is on an active invoice and you assign a tax class with a future Application Date, the invoice will not be updated until after that date.
If a product is added to an invoice after the Application Date, the updated tax rate will apply.
Note: Multiple tax classes can be associated with a single product. Each tax class will appear as a separate line item in the invoice tooltip when the product is added to an invoice.

Can a product have more than one tax class?
Yes. Multiple tax classes can be assigned to a single product. Each will be calculated and displayed separately on the invoice.
Will removing a tax class from a product affect open invoices?
Only line items added on or after the Application Date on current and future invoices are affected. Past invoices are never impacted.
Can I remove a tax class from a product the same way I added it?
Yes. Tax classes can be removed from products individually or via Bulk Edit using the same process as assigning them.
