What's New in Instinct: August 2026 Releases

Written by Melissa Duarte

August brings six featured updates to Instinct EMR and Instinct Treatment Plan—covering self-serve clinical configuration, client communication, automations, analytics access, and a long-requested inventory fix. Each featured section links to a full walkthrough article when available.

Create and configure vital signs without contacting Support

Configuring vitals used to mean submitting a request to Support and waiting for a response. Admins can now create and configure new vital signs directly in Admin in Instinct EMR—set the label, toggle trending on or off, and add preset drop-down options, all without involving Support. Changes take effect immediately for your clinical team.

To learn more, see Create Vital Signs in Admin.

Note: This is available to all users with the admin_products permission. No Support request is required to add or update vital signs.

See unread Client Chat conversations at a glance

The Client Chat icon in the main navigation of Instinct EMR now shows a notification badge when there are unread conversations. The count reflects the number of conversations with unread messages, so your team knows exactly what needs attention without navigating away from their current screen. This update is active wherever Client Chat is enabled for your practice—no setup required.

Automate follow-ups after appointment reminders and cancellations

Repetitive follow-ups and communication gaps after appointment changes are easy to miss when your team is busy. Two new Automation triggers let you build rules that fire automatically when those events happen:

  • Appointment Reminder Sent: triggers a rule when an appointment reminder is sent to a client

  • Appointment Canceled: triggers a rule when an appointment is canceled

Pair the new triggers with two new conditions—Appointment Type and Appointment Service—to scope rules to exactly the right visits. You can also now update categories and statuses in bulk directly from the Automations page in Instinct EMR.

Access Analytics dashboards directly in Instinct Treatment Plan

Practices using Instinct Treatment Plan can now access six Analytics dashboards directly—covering accounts and patients, treatments, visits, and product usage. These are the same dashboards Instinct EMR customers use, now available for Instinct Treatment Plan teams to pull directly. No Support request is needed.

See How to use the Analytics Dashboards for more information.

Note: The following Analytics dashboards are now available to Instinct Treatment Plan practices: Account and Patient Alert Usage, Accounts and Patients, Product Usage, Task List Status Audit, Treatments Overview, and Visits Overview. Instinct EMR practices already have access to Analytics dashboards and are not affected by this change.

Prevent negative stock with automatic lot rollover in Stockroom

When a lot or expiration batch hits zero, Instinct EMR was previously depleting inventory into negative stock. Instinct EMR now automatically rolls over to the next available stock when a lot or expiration batch runs out—one of the most-requested Stockroom fixes. This works automatically for all practices using lot or expiration tracking. No changes to your workflow are required.

Other improvements in August 2026

These additional updates also shipped to Instinct EMR in August 2026.

Interface and navigation

  • Refreshed interface is now the default. The updated Instinct EMR interface is now the default experience for all users.

  • Patient Snapshot is now a top-level view. The Patient Snapshot page is now a top-level view in Instinct EMR, no longer nested under the chart hierarchy, making it faster to reach key patient information.

Clinical and patient records

  • Breed management. Staff can now add or update breeds directly in Instinct EMR, and breeds are organized by species in the patient breed picker. To manage Breeds in Instinct, users must have the admin_breeds permission. See How to Manage Breeds and Assign Species for more information.

Scheduling and client communication

  • Appointment cancellation notifications. Canceling an appointment now automatically triggers a notification to relevant parties.

Billing and end of day

  • Void reason required. Voiding an invoice line item now requires a reason, supporting audit trails.

  • Purchase order fee fields. Purchase orders now include dedicated Taxes, Shipping, and Additional Fees fields. These amounts are included in the purchase order total and locked on receipt.

  • Invoice closed-by tracking. Invoices now show which staff member closed them, displayed in the sidebar and at the top of the invoice.

  • Account Ledger filters upgraded. The Account Ledger now has an upgraded filters menu—search for patients or invoices and filter by status, payment type, and card brand directly on the page.

Admin and integrations

  • Diagnostic partner integrations in Admin. Diagnostic partner integrations—including Radimal, Vetology, RadsForVets, and others—are now visible and manageable in Admin → Practice → Integrations in Instinct EMR.

  • Billable status is now self-serve. Practices can now change whether a product is billable directly in Admin → Inventory → Products in Instinct EMR, without contacting Support.

Inventory

  • Correct staff names in Stockroom and Invoices. Stockroom and Invoices now display the correct staff name instead of "Instinct Support User" in certain contexts.
