Install Instinct Using the MSI Installer

Use the Instinct MSI installer to deploy Instinct across multiple Windows computers in your veterinary practice. This installation method is designed for IT administrators or anyone using Microsoft Group Policy or similar centralized deployment tools.

Before you begin

Before deploying Instinct:

  • Confirm that you manage multiple Windows computers.

  • Confirm that you have access to Microsoft Group Policy or another centralized deployment tool.

  • Choose whether you need the machine-wide MSI or per-user MSI.

  • Create or identify a network share location that all computers receiving Instinct can access.

Choose the correct MSI installer

Instinct is packaged as an MSI file using WIX. Two MSI installation options are available:

Machine-wide MSI

The machine-wide MSI installs Instinct in the computer’s Program Files directory.

Use the machine-wide MSI when:

  • Instinct should be available to all users on the computer.

  • Your practice uses thin clients that run from the same parent machine.

  • You want to reduce memory usage compared with installing Instinct separately for each user.

Per-user MSI

The per-user MSI installs Instinct in an individual user’s app data directory.

Use the per-user MSI when you need to control which users can access Instinct on a shared computer. Install the MSI only for the users who should have access.

The MSI installer creates desktop and Start menu shortcuts and supports msiexec usage.

Create a shared network location

Create a network share that every computer receiving Instinct can access.

  1. Create a folder in a suitable location.

  2. Right-click the folder and select Properties.

  3. Select the Sharing tab.

  4. Click Advanced Sharing.

  5. Click Permissions.

  6. Add the appropriate users who need access to the shared location.

  7. Give each user at least Read permission.

  8. Click OK to return to the folder properties.

  9. Note the network path for the shared location.

  10. Copy the MSI installation file into the shared folder.

Note: Keep the network path available. You will need it when adding the MSI package to Group Policy.

Create the Group Policy Object

Create a Group Policy Object, or GPO, to deploy the Instinct MSI package.

  1. Open Group Policy Management.

  2. Expand Forest: [Forest Name] → Domains → [Domain Name].

  3. Right-click the domain name.

  4. Select Create a GPO in this domain, and Link it here.

  5. Enter a suitable name for the policy.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Select the newly created GPO.

  8. Open the Settings tab.

  9. Right-click within the GPO and select Edit.

Add the Instinct MSI package to the GPO

Add the Instinct MSI file from the shared network location to the GPO.

  1. In the Group Policy Management Editor, expand Computer Configuration → Policies → Software Settings → Software Installations.

  2. Right-click within Software Installations.

  3. Select New → Package.

  4. In the Open dialog box, navigate to the shared network location.

  5. Select the Instinct MSI installation file.

  6. Click Open.

  7. In the Deploy Software window, select Assigned.

  8. Click OK.

The Instinct Vet Installer should appear in the Group Policy Management Editor after approximately 10 seconds. Instinct will install the next time the computers are restarted.

Apply the Instinct authentication token

The Instinct team will provide an instinct_token file to authenticate access to the Instinct App.

Apply the token using Start Auto Log In

To enable in-practice authentication:

  1. Place the instinct_token file on a file server that all devices running the Instinct App can access through the practice’s local network.

  2. Send your Onboarding Manager the full folder path, such as \\servername\folder1.

  3. Click Start Auto Log In to apply the token.

Apply the token using manual login

  1. Select Use Manual Log In.

  2. Drag and drop the downloaded token file onto the Instinct login screen.
