Install Instinct on a Personal Computer

Written by Meridythe Lanoue

Staff can install the Instinct desktop app on a personal Windows or Mac computer to access the system from home. Your practice administrator or IT team will provide the installer file and your instinct_token file—you do not need to download anything from the internet.

Note: Instinct is optimized for screens 12" or larger. Installing on a smaller screen is not recommended. If you are setting up a Chromebook, use the web browser method instead—see How to access Instinct from a web browser on a tablet.

Before you begin

  • Confirm your practice administrator or IT team has provided two files: the installer (.exe for Windows, .dmg for Mac) and your instinct_token file.

  • Save both files somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder or Desktop.

  • Do not rename or modify the instinct_token file. Changing the file name or contents will prevent it from working.

Install the Instinct app

The installer file name starts with Instinct and ends in .exe (Windows) or .dmg (Mac). The version number in the file name may vary.

  1. Locate the installer file provided by your practice administrator or IT team.

  2. Double-click the file to run the installer.

  3. Follow any on-screen prompts. The app will launch automatically when installation is complete.

  4. Pin the Instinct icon to your taskbar (Windows) or drag it to your Dock (Mac) for easy access.

Note: On a Mac, you may see a message that the file cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. If this happens: open Finder, locate the installer file, hold the Control key, and click the file. Select Open from the menu to proceed.

Load your instinct_token file

After installing the app, open Instinct and use one of the following methods to load your instinct_token file and connect to your practice:

  • Drag and drop (recommended): Drag the instinct_token file directly onto the Instinct login screen.

  • Click Select Token on the login screen and browse to your instinct_token file.

  • Manual entry (last resort): If your practice has provided the token value separately, you can enter it directly on the login screen. Copy and paste the value; do not type it manually, as errors will prevent login.

Instinct will validate your credentials and complete the login process.

Troubleshooting

If you cannot log in after loading your token:

  • Confirm you are using the instinct_token file as originally provided—not a renamed or modified copy.

  • Try using the file browser method if drag-and-drop did not work.

  • Contact your practice administrator to confirm they provided the correct file.

  • Contact Instinct Support if the issue persists.

Note: If you are a practice administrator or IT team member setting up Instinct across multiple workstations, see Install the Instinct Practice System for the full practice-wide installation guide.
